“Kata” (型) means “stencil” or “pattern”, and “zome” (染め) means “to dye”. Katazome is a traditional Japanese dyeing method that originated in the Edo Period. It began in 1603, from whence the indigo plant grew wild and plentiful throughout the island nation.
Intricate patterns of meaningful Buddhist symbolism are made with rice paste resist called nori, applied through a paper stencil onto a fabric. The fabric can be dyed once the paste is dry. The resist is then washed off to reveal the protected fabric (patterns) underneath—organic indigo dye imprints with impeccable clarity. These century old Katazome fabrics have surprisingly survived till today.
Wabi-sabi (侘寂) is the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in flaws; It is the belief that all things, whether old or worn-out, have a place in this world; damage, wear and tear are considered precious scars to be embraced as prized proof of perseverance. Hence, UNDONE LAB believes that the antique beauty in the ancient art and artifacts of Katazome have a place in YOUR modern world.
